Campaign for Corbin

Kara and Shane McHenry recently gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, Corbin. Corbin was diagnosed in utero with Trisomy 13. Trisomy 13 is a genetic disorder in which a person contains extra genetic material from Chromosome 13 that disrupts the normal course of development, causing multiple and complex organ defects. No cure currently exists for this condition that affects somewhere between 1 in 10,000 and 1 in 21,700 live births.

The family has put together a bucket list for Corbin and one of the things on the list is to have something named after him. To help check one thing off the family’s list, Diamond Candles has decided to name a new candle after Corbin and for every $25 Corbin Candle sold $10 will be given directly to aid the McHenry family’s medical expenses.

Corbin’s Story

Kara and Shane McHenry’s pregnancy started out like any couple’s pregnancy. Kara took a test and the couple went to a doctor to confirm the beginning of a new and beautiful life. After some early ultrasounds, the doctors found a large cyst on Kara’s right ovary. The cyst began to grow over the next four months.

Being concerned, the doctors eventually sent the couple to a high risk specialist who saw some possible early signs of Down Syndrome. The specialist said they needed to run some tests. About a week later, the McHenrys received a call from their nurse with the results. The nurse told them that Corbin had been diagnosed with Trisomy 13.

The McHenrys quickly looked for a specialized health care facility that could meet the needs of their expected baby. After an extensive search they found the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, one of the top children’s hospitals in the country. After applying and making a few phone calls, they were finally accepted. Since they lived in Greenville, N.C., at the time they had to uproot to find a home closer to Philadelphia. Luckily, they were able stay with Kara’s Aunt in New Jersey near the hospital.

After a few weeks in New Jersey, Kara was having some severe swelling and was immediately admitted to the hospital. After two nights in the hospital seeing Kara’s health worsen, the doctors decided that an emergency c-section was necessary if Corbin had any chance of survival. Kara was only 32 weeks along at the time. “We were prepared by doctors earlier that day, that our son would probably not make it out alive,” Kara said. “He would not cry a first cry, take a first breath, or get the chance to move his tiny fingers and toes.”

And on April 4th, 2013 at 9:53 p.m., Corbin Alfred McHenry was Born Breathing. He weighed 4 pounds, 4 ounces and 17 inches long.

Corbin has had a number of health problems since birth. He currently lives with a trach and ventilator to help with complications in breathing. He also has hyperinsulinism and he is fed through a gastrostomy tube due to many complications with his digestive tract.

Most importantly he is alive and with us!

Corbin still has his bad days but he is staying strong and continuing to progress, Kara said. He has won the hearts of all of his nurses and our family has greatly appreciated the thoughts and prayers from everyone across the country.

If you would like to help support Corbin you can pre-order a Corbin Candle. For every $25 candle sold $10 will go directly to the McHenrys to help cover their medical costs.
